Slack turns group chat into the front door for AI coding agents
Slack Code bundles Claude Code, Devin, GitHub Copilot and Vercel's agent into shared channels, betting on oversight as the next battleground in AI development.
The answer
Slack launched free "code channels" where teams supervise AI coding agents together.
Slack is betting that the next fight in AI coding isn't which agent writes the best code, but who controls the room where humans watch it work. On 20 August 2026, the Salesforce-owned company launched Slack Code, a feature that turns any conversation into a dedicated "code channel" the moment someone tags an AI coding agent.
Inside that channel, tabs show the conversation, the agent's plan, code diffs and live previews of HTML output. Team members see exactly what the agent sees, can leave feedback it acts on, and must approve the finished work before it ships. Once a task is done, the channel archives itself, leaving the exchange as an audit log.
Slack Code is included in every Slack plan at no extra cost, though using the agents themselves may still require a paid account with their respective providers. The rollout is gradual. Launch partners are Anthropic's Claude Code, Cognition's Devin, GitHub Copilot and Vercel's agent; OpenAI is building its own integration. Slack has said it plans to open the underlying code-channel APIs to other developers later, widening the field beyond the initial four.
GitHub's chief product officer, Mario Rodriguez, framed the move as part of a larger shift in how software gets built: "Slack is a strategic part of a broader GitHub promise: humans set direction, agents close the loop," he said, according to Techzine.
The design answers a problem that has grown alongside agentic coding tools: work that once lived in a single developer's terminal now needs to be visible to a whole team. Slack Code puts planning, review and sign-off in one shared space rather than scattered across pull requests and side conversations, as VentureBeat reported.
The Insider view
Slack isn't selling a better coding agent. It's selling the layer that sits above all of them, and doing it for free, which raises the cost of staying out. By hosting Claude Code, Devin, Copilot and Vercel's agent under one roof, Slack turns itself into the default oversight console for agentic development, forcing rivals to either integrate or watch teams route approval and review through a Salesforce product.
The open API promise is the bigger signal. If any developer can plug an agent into a code channel, Slack positions itself as neutral infrastructure rather than a single vendor's front end, which should draw in agent makers who don't want to be shut out of wherever development teams already work. GitHub's endorsement suggests the audit-log and approval mechanics matter as much to enterprise buyers as raw coding speed, since compliance and accountability are what turn agent output into shippable work.
