The answer

Three undocumented OpenAI model IDs named "aurora" briefly appeared in its API on 18 October.

OpenAI has no pricing, no changelog and no stated use case for three models that nonetheless showed up in its own API. For anyone building on the platform or tracking its product cadence, that makes the "aurora" IDs a signal worth logging, though not yet one to act on.

According to Crypto Briefing, the model IDs aurora-red-alpha, aurora-green-alpha and aurora-blue-alpha appeared in OpenAI's API on 18 October. They were visible only briefly.

The three IDs did not behave alike. Calls to aurora-red-alpha returned 503 capacity errors. The green and blue variants returned 404 errors. OpenAI has published nothing on any of them.

The "alpha" suffix in each name is the only hint about status in the report. OpenAI has not confirmed what the models are or whether it will release them.

Our account rests on a secondary summary of the Crypto Briefing report; the full article was not read.

The Insider view

The detail worth watching is the split in error codes. A 503 capacity error on the red variant differs from a 404 on green and blue, and the report does not explain the difference. We will not guess at the cause. What the pattern does show is that the three IDs were not handled identically.

For operators and investors, the practical position is simple. There is nothing to price, nothing to benchmark and nothing to plan around. Any competitor analysis built on these IDs would be speculation. The signal to watch is an official OpenAI changelog entry or published pricing; until either appears, the aurora models are an unconfirmed sighting.
