OpenAI puts its frontier models on Google Cloud, a rival's shelf
OpenAI and Google Cloud said Codex agentic workflows and OpenAI's models will be sold through Model Garden, extending the hyperscaler route to market for frontier labs.
The answer
OpenAI's frontier models and Codex workflows are coming to Google Cloud's Model Garden.
OpenAI is selling through a competitor's storefront. On Wednesday 21 October, OpenAI and Google Cloud announced that OpenAI's frontier models and Codex agentic workflows are coming to Google Cloud's Model Garden, according to PYMNTS.
Google Cloud customers will be able to buy the models there. They will get "native access" for complex agentic workflows at scale, backed by Google Cloud's data governance and infrastructure, the companies said. Access through Google Antigravity and the Gemini Agent is "soon to come".
The companies pitch the deal to enterprises as "model choice flexibility and the best model for each task". The PYMNTS report names no specific models. It also gives no pricing and no launch dates.
The move fits a pattern PYMNTS describes, citing Reuters: hyperscalers are becoming the main commercial channels for frontier labs, and they typically take a percentage of sales. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian has said the platform welcomes any model popular with developers.
The numbers at a rival show how much that channel can matter. Anthropic got 47% of its 2025 revenue from Amazon's and Google's cloud platforms, according to its IPO filing, as cited by Reuters via PYMNTS.
The Insider view
For OpenAI, this is distribution. Enterprises that have standardised on Google Cloud can now buy its models without a separate procurement route, and the data governance pitch goes straight at the objection that slows regulated buyers. The price is a revenue share, if the typical hyperscaler arrangement applies here. Neither company has said.
Google Cloud gains a catalogue that includes the model family many developers already ask for, which supports Kurian's open-platform stance. The exposure is on the Gemini side: Model Garden customers will now have OpenAI models beside Google's own, and the "soon to come" access through Antigravity and the Gemini Agent shows where the two products will meet.
Watch three things: the pricing, the model list and the dates, none of which have been disclosed. They will show whether OpenAI is treating Google Cloud as a full channel or a partial one, and how much of the sale it keeps.
