Nvidia is putting $235 billion behind its own stock, the largest share buyback authorisation increase in its history, days after a broader sell-off tested confidence in AI spending. The chipmaker's board added $150 billion to its existing repurchase programme on Monday 28 September 2026, according to [Nvidia's announcement](https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/nvidia-announces-a-150-billion-share-repurchase-authorization-increase), taking the total remaining authorisation to $235 billion.

Founder and chief executive Jensen Huang said Nvidia's growth "is being driven by a once-in-a-generation platform shift to AI and accelerated computing." He said the company's cash generation gives it the capacity both to invest in that shift and to return capital to shareholders, and that the increase reflects confidence in the long-term opportunity.

Nvidia expects to execute the full $235 billion programme through fiscal year 2028. The Motley Fool estimates that sum equals about 4.3% of Nvidia's market value, or more than $39 billion of buybacks a quarter across the six quarters to the end of that fiscal year.

The company bought back nearly $20 billion of shares last quarter and repurchased 282 million shares for $40.4 billion in fiscal 2026. The latest increase follows $80 billion added in May 2026, $60 billion in August 2025 and $50 billion in August 2024.

Nvidia shares traded about 3% higher after the announcement, [CNBC reported](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/09/28/nvidia-share-buyback-plan-gets-150-billion-boost.html), recovering part of a 3.7% fall tied to broader caution over AI spending. The stock is up about 20% this year, and Nvidia remains the world's most valuable company.

In August Nvidia projected about 70% sales growth for its next fiscal year, and Huang said earlier this month that the company would double the number of chips it sells in 2027. He has worked to play down concerns about an AI bubble.

## The Insider view

A $235 billion buyback is Nvidia telling the market it trusts its own numbers more than the market currently does. The size of the increase, the largest in the company's history, is built to outweigh a 3.7% share-price fall driven by AI-spending nerves rather than by anything in Nvidia's own results. For investors, the signal is that management reads the sell-off as sentiment, not fundamentals, and is willing to spend at a pace of more than $39 billion a quarter to say so. For rivals in accelerated computing, the message is that Nvidia can fund both capital expenditure and shareholder returns from cash flow alone, without trading one off against the other.
