Microsoft preps cheaper AI rival to Anthropic's Mythos security tool
Project Perception routes tasks across Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic models to undercut Mythos on price for vulnerability hunting.
The answer
Microsoft is building a multi-model AI security platform to underprice Anthropic's Mythos.
Microsoft is preparing to undercut Anthropic's flagship security product on price, not just performance. Project Perception, an AI cybersecurity platform reported by The Information and summarised by TechRepublic on 17 July 2026, would route vulnerability-detection and patching tasks across models from Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic, using cheaper models for inventory, log parsing, codebase navigation and triage, and reserving the most capable models for tracing exploit paths and writing fixes.
The target is Claude Mythos 5, Anthropic's specialist vulnerability-hunting model, which the notes describe as strong but costly: $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, and currently restricted to vetted security partners. Microsoft's pitch is to match that analytical capability at a lower cost through its model-router approach, according to TechRepublic.
The platform builds on Microsoft's existing MDASH system, which scored 88.45% on the CyberGym benchmark in May 2026, ahead of Mythos's 83.1% and GPT-5.5's 81.8%. Microsoft already sells Defender, Sentinel, Entra and Security Copilot into the same enterprise security budgets, and CNBC reported the company is touting the cost savings explicitly. Project Perception was expected to be unveiled at a company event later in July, with a public preview to follow, and marks Microsoft's first major security push since a February leadership shake-up.
The Insider view
Anthropic built Mythos as a premium, gatekept product for vetted partners, betting that top-tier vulnerability detection would command top-tier prices. Microsoft's answer is volume and distribution: bundle a router across three model providers, undercut Mythos on cost, and sell it alongside Defender, Sentinel, Entra and Security Copilot to customers already inside its security stack.
The benchmark gap is Microsoft's strongest card, MDASH already beats both Mythos and GPT-5.5 on CyberGym, so a cheaper option with comparable or better results puts direct pricing pressure on Anthropic before Perception even ships. Anthropic's advantage, restricted access to a specialist model, has kept it out of the broad enterprise sale; if Microsoft's router proves it can match that quality more cheaply and openly, Anthropic will face pressure to widen access to Mythos, cut its price, or cede the mass-market security budget to Microsoft entirely.
