Meta's Muse grabs No. 1 app slot from ChatGPT with fewer downloads

Ten days after launch, Meta's agent overtook ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude on Apple's US chart, and a new Mac app extends its reach into users' files and calendars.

The answer

Meta's Muse AI agent hit No. 1 on the US App Store on 18 September.

Meta has turned distribution into velocity. Ten days after Muse launched in the US, the agent overtook ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and even Instagram to become the No. 1 free app on Apple's US App Store, according to Sensor Tower data cited by Fox Business. That is the clearest signal yet that the fight for consumer AI is moving from chatbots to agents that act on a user's behalf, and that Meta intends to lead it.

Muse, built on Meta's Muse Spark 1.3 model, launched on 8 September across the Muse app, muse.ai and WhatsApp. It sends email, books trips and restaurants, fills in forms, buys tickets and cancels forgotten subscriptions, connecting to Gmail, Google Calendar and Workspace, Outlook, Ticketmaster, OpenTable, Spotify, Apple Health, Peloton, Plaid and Function Health, with purchases routed through Link by Stripe. Meta says each user's agent runs in its own cloud virtual machine, with a separate system called Sentinel governing network access and actions, and credentials kept away from the model so it never sees real passwords or card numbers.

The download numbers show Meta winning on distribution rather than raw pull: Muse crossed 730,000 US downloads by 18 September, averaging about 73,000 a day, according to Yahoo Tech. That trails ChatGPT's roughly 87,000-a-day pace in its first eight days back in 2023. Muse reached the top slot with a smaller daily haul, a sign of how much Meta's existing user base and WhatsApp integration are doing the work.

Meta wasted no time layering on price and product. The company launched Muse in Canada the same day it hit No. 1 in the US, and rolled out a Mac app, announced by Mark Zuckerberg on 17 September, that lets the agent organise files, fill in forms and work inside Messages, Calendar and Notes, with continuity back to WhatsApp. Pricing runs free, then $20 a month for Power and $100 a month for Max. Zuckerberg framed the access model directly: "You choose which apps and services Muse can access, and you can disconnect them anytime."

The Insider view

The chart position matters less than what it reveals about the model of growth. Meta didn't need to out-download ChatGPT's launch to beat it to No. 1; it needed WhatsApp, Instagram and its own hardware footprint to funnel users into Muse fast. That is a distribution advantage OpenAI, Google and Anthropic cannot easily replicate, and it explains why Meta moved straight to monetisation with two paid tiers rather than sitting on a free tool to build habit first.

The Mac app is the more consequential move commercially. Pulling Muse into a user's files, Messages, Calendar and Notes turns it from a task-runner into an operating layer on the desktop, the kind of surface area that raises switching costs once people connect their financial and health accounts through Plaid and Function Health. Rivals with stronger models but weaker distribution now face a agent market where Meta sets the pace on reach, even if its underlying model, Muse Spark 1.3, is not established as the strongest on capability.
