Google just lost the engineer who built much of its infrastructure, and chose to bankroll his next company anyway. Jeff Dean, Google's 30th employee and DeepMind's chief scientist, leaves on 6 August 2026 after 27 years to co-found Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation aimed at automating scientific discovery with AI.

He is not going alone. Sanjay Ghemawat, his longtime collaborator on MapReduce and Bigtable, joins him, as do Oriol Vinyals, his former Gemini co-lead, and Quoc Le, co-creator of sequence-to-sequence learning. Between them the four hold decades of the infrastructure and research work that underpins Google's AI stack.

Discovery Loop is targeting the research cycle itself: hypothesis generation, experimentation and analysis in machine learning, science and engineering. The company says it wants AI systems that can improve themselves with minimal human feedback, a bet that automating research is the next competitive front after chatbots and coding assistants. [Wired reports](https://wired.com/story/jeff-dean-google-discovery-loop-startup) Khosla Ventures, Radical Ventures and Alphabet are backing the venture, with Google as founding investor and cloud partner and a joint research framework planned on machine-learning systems infrastructure.

The exit lands on the same day Google reshuffled Gemini's leadership: Demis Hassabis stepped back from running Google DeepMind, and Koray Kavukcuoglu took over Gemini, according to [The Next Web](https://thenextweb.com/news/google-deepmind-shakeup-hassabis-jeff-dean-vinyals-discovery-loop). Dean was also reportedly behind "Frozen," Google's internal idea for chips with Gemini's architecture built into silicon.

## The Insider view

Google keeping a stake and a cloud deal in Discovery Loop turns a rival-in-the-making into a hedge: if automated research becomes the next AI battleground, Google gets exposure either way, without carrying the venture on its own payroll. That's a shrewd move, but it also signals Google could not retain the talent outright, even with money on the table.

The timing compounds the read. Losing a Gemini co-lead and its chief scientist on the same day Hassabis steps back from DeepMind's day-to-day leadership suggests a broader reshuffle at the top of Google's AI effort, not just one high-profile departure. OpenAI, Anthropic and well-funded start-ups are all chasing AI that accelerates science; Discovery Loop now enters that race with infrastructure pedigree, serious capital, and a former employer as its cloud partner.

## Key takeaways

- Google's 30th employee exits after 27 years, taking three senior AI veterans with him
- Khosla Ventures, Radical Ventures and Alphabet back Discovery Loop as founding investors
- Departure lands same day Hassabis steps back and Kavukcuoglu takes over Gemini
