Google Cloud's 82% surge funds an $811 billion AI spending bet
Alphabet's backlog swells to $514 billion as Gemini's reach and capital commitments both jump.
The answer
Alphabet's backlog swells to $514 billion as Gemini's reach and capital commitments both jump.
answer: Alphabet's Q2 2026 cloud growth and user numbers justify a record spending ramp.
takeaways:
- Google Cloud revenue up 82%, backlog hits $514 billion, pressuring AWS and Azure
- Q2 capex hit $44.9 billion; future spending commitments climb to $811 billion
- Gemini app reaches 950 million monthly users, Search AI Mode tops 1 billion
Google Cloud's revenue jumped 82% in the second quarter, and its backlog now stands at $514 billion, according to Alphabet's 22 July earnings update. That growth is the clearest evidence yet that enterprise demand for Google's AI infrastructure is outrunning supply, and it is bankrolling one of the largest capital spending commitments in the industry.
Total Alphabet revenue rose 24% year on year. Search and other revenue was up 17%, YouTube ads climbed 13%. But cloud is the standout line, and the backlog figure signals contracted future revenue that dwarfs the quarter's own results.
Capital expenditure for the quarter reached $44.9 billion. Bloomberg reported that Alphabet's future spending commitments have climbed to $811 billion, a figure that dwarfs the quarterly capex number and points to sustained, multi-year infrastructure build-out.
Usage numbers back up the spending. The Gemini app now has 950 million monthly active users, and Search AI Mode has passed 1 billion. Model APIs process about 22 billion tokens per minute, up from 16 billion. More than 9 million developers build with Google's models monthly, nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise, and close to 500 cloud customers each process over 1 trillion tokens a year. Gemma models have been downloaded more than 900 million times, with Gemma 4 alone passing 300 million since April. Antigravity counts 2.4 million weekly active users, and the Agent Development Kit has near 70 million downloads. Elsewhere, 140 million people used Ask YouTube in June, more than 1.7 billion unique viewers watched World Cup content on YouTube, and Waymo has completed over 1 million home deliveries. Google is now pre-training Gemini 4, according to the earnings call remarks.
The Insider view
The $514 billion cloud backlog is the number that matters most to rivals: it shows enterprises are locking in multi-year Google Cloud commitments at a pace that outstrips AWS and Azure's own growth rates, giving Google pricing power it lacked a year ago. The $811 billion in future spending commitments is the flip side — a bet that demand keeps compounding, and a bar that AWS and Microsoft must now match or cede ground on.
The consumer numbers matter for a different reason: 950 million Gemini app users and over 1 billion on Search AI Mode give Google a distribution advantage no AI lab can easily replicate, since it rides on Search's existing reach. As Pichai put it, "Our AI investments are redefining what's possible across every part of our business." The risk sits in the capex-to-backlog ratio: if Gemini 4's pre-training and the infrastructure build don't convert backlog into recognised revenue fast enough, the $811 billion commitment becomes the figure investors scrutinise hardest.
