The Trump administration has picked its AI vendors for the federal government's public face, and they are Google and xAI. America.gov, launched Tuesday, routes citizens seeking passports, campsite bookings or Social Security replacements through chatbots built on Gemini and Grok, giving both companies a foothold in a market of more than 100 million potential users.

The site, unveiled by executive order, positions itself as "a unified digital front door to the Federal Government for every individual in the US seeking Federal information or services". Users type a need into a search bar and the system, drawing on roughly 29,000 government websites, points them to the right process. US Chief Design Officer Joe Gebbia, the Airbnb co-founder now running the effort, said the tool works from "one official source of truth: The United States Government."

Google confirmed its role as technology partner, saying it is "leveraging Gemini to help more than 100 million people access critical public resources with greater speed and ease." A White House spokesperson confirmed xAI's Grok as the second model powering the site. The order directs agencies to connect their services "as soon as possible," with identity verification routed through Login.gov, and implementation split across the General Services Administration, the National Design Studio and the Office of Management and Budget.

For now the site only guides users to services; Trump's order promises that from 2027 it will let people complete processes and track their progress directly, covering tasks such as passport applications, post-marriage name changes, campsite reservations, Medicare plan selection and veterans' benefits. The launch was staged as a day-long event at Washington's Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium, with Trump appearing alongside Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CMS Administrator Dr Mehmet Oz.

The rollout sits alongside other federal AI programmes, including the GSA's OneGov and USAi initiatives, and follows scrutiny over Gebbia's Tesla board seat given Tesla's stake in SpaceXAI and its use of Grok in vehicles. [FedScoop reported](https://fedscoop.com/trump-launches-ai-site-america-gov/) the site drew immediate criticism from The Register, which called it "unfinished, poorly designed."

## The Insider view

Landing the federal contract for a portal aimed at 100 million users is a commercial win neither Google nor xAI will downplay, and it gives both a government reference customer at a moment when AI vendors are racing for public-sector credibility. Google's framing, emphasising scale and access, reads like a company keen to be seen as the dependable infrastructure partner rather than the flashier newcomer; xAI's quieter confirmation, via a White House spokesperson rather than its own statement, suggests less appetite to claim the spotlight.

The real test is the 2027 upgrade. Guidance is low-risk; letting an AI system execute passport renewals or Medicare selections raises the stakes on accuracy and liability considerably, and early criticism of the site's design suggests the execution gap between ambition and delivery is already visible. Watch whether other agencies actually connect their services "as soon as possible" as ordered, or whether OneGov and USAi end up competing internally for the same budget and attention that America.gov now claims.
