Grok 4.6 on Wednesday. Gemini 3.7 Flash on Thursday. Nobody shipped a flagship.
Google's third Flash model in six weeks lands one day after xAI's Grok 4.6, while the actual Gemini 3.5 Pro sits on a fourth missed deadline. Read the calendar, not the press release.
The answer
Gemini 3.7 Flash shipped 13 August 2026, a day after Grok 4.6, while Gemini 3.5 Pro stays unreleased.
Here's the calendar, in order. 12 August 2026: xAI ships Grok 4.6. 13 August 2026: Google ships Gemini 3.7 Flash — its third Flash release in barely six weeks, following 3.5 Flash-Lite and 3.6 Flash. Read those two dates back to back and the framing writes itself: a compressed, overlapping burst of mid-tier launches, timed into the same week, from labs that are not, in either case, shipping their actual best model.
The stopgap admission
Google didn't invent the word 'stopgap' — a report on the rebuilt Gemini 3.5 Pro used it a month before 3.7 Flash existed, describing Google DeepMind's registered Flash model names as releases designed to buy time for further Pro development, after the flagship missed a July target.
Hallucinations blocked the July 17 target; stopgap Flash models now in Google's queue.
Two Flash releases later, that framing holds up uncomfortably well. Gemini 3.7 Flash is a good model — Google's own benchmark jumps (FrontierCode 1.1 from 34.4% to 43.6%, DeepSWE from 49.0% to 65.3%) are real, and Google was honest that it's 'a direct result of developer feedback and algorithmic innovations' rather than a new base model. That is precisely the profile of a model built to keep the release calendar full, not to close a capability gap.
The comparison Google didn't run
Google's own launch materials compare Gemini 3.7 Flash to Claude Sonnet 5 and GPT-5.6 Terra — both mid-tier models — and win narrowly on FrontierCode 1.1: 43.6% against 42.7% and 41.3%, at roughly a third of the price. Nobody at Google put Claude Opus 5 or GPT-5.6 Sol in that table, and the reason isn't hard to guess: Gemini 3.7 Flash scored 56 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, against Grok 4.6's 61 — a model xAI shipped the day before, at a barely higher price.
| Model | Launch | Input / output per M tokens | AA Intelligence Index |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini 3.7 Flash | 13 Aug 2026 | $0.75 / $3.75 (intro) | 56 |
| Grok 4.6 | 12 Aug 2026 | $2 / $6 | 61 |
| Claude Sonnet 5 | — | $2 / $10 | not disclosed |
| GPT-5.6 Terra | — | $2 / $12 | not disclosed |
The reshuffle that says the quiet part
Eight days before Gemini 3.7 Flash shipped, Google DeepMind's CEO stepped back. Demis Hassabis moved to chairman of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet on 5 August 2026; CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu took over Gemini's day-to-day development; Jeff Dean, employee number thirty and a 27-year veteran, walked out the same day to start his own venture. Reporting was not gentle about why.
has faced repeated delays, and fallen behind models from OpenAI and Anthropic at the frontier
There's a money angle behind the reshuffle too, and it's the kind that puts pressure on a release calendar. Alphabet's AI capital expenditure hit $44.92bn in the second quarter of 2026 alone, with full-year guidance raised to $195–205bn — and reporting around the leadership change noted investors are demanding faster commercial returns on that spend, not more roadmap slippage. A three-week Flash cadence is cheap, visible progress to show a market that just watched the CEO of your AI division step back. That doesn't make Gemini 3.7 Flash worse; it does explain why it exists on this particular Thursday.
What this isn't
None of this makes Gemini 3.7 Flash a bad model — the benchmark deltas are genuine and the pricing is genuinely disruptive for anyone buying mid-tier coding capability at volume. The criticism is narrower and sharper: don't read 'three weeks after the last one' as a company sprinting ahead. Read it as a company that has, for three release cycles running, had exactly one tier it can reliably ship, and is shipping it as often as it can while the tier that actually matters keeps missing its own deadlines.
