Anthropic swings to $567M operating loss as compute costs climb

The amended IPO filing shows slower growth, higher costs and a third-quarter operating loss, with short-term compute at the centre of the squeeze.

The answer

Anthropic's amended IPO filing shows a Q3 operating loss as compute costs rise.

Anthropic's growth has slowed and its compute bill has jumped, pushing the company into an operating loss just as it prepares to list. On Monday 2 November 2026, the company filed an amended IPO prospectus with the SEC that adds third-quarter results to its initial S-1, which had disclosed a first-half net loss of $80.7 billion. Fortune's coverage on Yahoo Finance sets out the figures.

Revenue for the three months to 30 September was about $17 billion, up from $11.6 billion in the second quarter and $1.4 billion a year earlier. Growth slowed to about 47%, down from about 144% in Q2. Price cuts on new model versions and contractual discounts reduced revenue by about $600 million between Q2 and Q3. Total operating expenses reached $17.5 billion, against $10.6 billion in Q2, and the company posted a $567 million operating loss where it had earned $974 million in the prior quarter.

The filing attributes the swing mainly to short-term compute. It says short-term compute "currently costs significantly more" than compute secured under multi-year deals, and Anthropic bought about $5.0 billion of compute on short-term commitments in the quarter. Compute and infrastructure charges were about $9.9 billion in Q3, roughly four times the year-earlier level. A further $2 billion in non-cash charges relates to an employee donation-matching programme. The adjusted operating margin fell to 15% from 19%, while adjusted profit, which excludes stock-based pay and the charitable charges, stayed positive and rose slightly on Q2. The filing gives no dollar figure for that adjusted profit.

The balance sheet is large but so are the commitments. Liquidity stood at $146.6 billion at 30 September, including cash, short-term investments and an available credit line. Committed spending totals about $895.4 billion, mostly for compute and infrastructure. Fortune-derived coverage reports a net loss of about $23.3 billion, mostly from an accounting charge tied to the rising value of convertible notes; that figure has not been checked against the SEC filing itself. FXStreet framed the same numbers as raising new questions about compute costs.

The Insider view

Investors pricing this listing now have a clear question to answer: how much of Anthropic's cost base is short-term compute, and how fast that share can shrink. The filing ties the margin squeeze to that gap between short-term and multi-year pricing, so the contracts it signs next will matter as much as the revenue it reports.

The filing also leaves the most important recent number out. The amendment omits October revenue, so investors cannot yet tell whether growth picked up after the third quarter. Watch for that figure, for any change in the mix of short-term commitments, and for confirmation of the net loss against the SEC filing before drawing conclusions from it.
