Anthropic licenses AP election data for Claude, its first paid publisher deal

The reported deal gives Claude attributed real-time election results, a step into paid news content.

The answer

Anthropic reportedly licensed Associated Press election data for Claude, its first paid digital publisher deal.

Anthropic has reportedly struck a content and data licensing deal with the Associated Press, giving Claude access to real-time election information attributed to the AP. Adweek reported the deal, citing two people familiar with the matter, shortly before the US midterm elections.

On Election Night, a user asking Claude about polling data received AP-attributed updates, according to the report. Adweek describes the agreement as Anthropic's first content licensing deal with a digital publisher and its first time paying a digital news publisher for content. Neither party disclosed financial terms or the length of the agreement, and it is unclear whether the deal extends beyond election output.

The move comes as OpenAI has more than a dozen publisher licensing deals. The AP was the first publisher to license content to both Google and OpenAI. Adweek also reports that publishers block Anthropic's crawlers, which left Claude relying on less credible sources for real-time news. A deal of this kind addresses that gap directly, though only for the content covered.

Neither Anthropic nor the AP commented on the record. Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment, so the deal rests on anonymous sourcing.

The Insider view

For Anthropic, the deal fills a visible hole in Claude's news coverage at a moment when election queries are heavy. It also buys a credible source without a long commitment, since the terms are undisclosed and the scope may be limited to election output. Adweek's author reads it as a limited experiment, not a change in licensing strategy.

For publishers, the question is whether AP's arrangement becomes a template. OpenAI's larger portfolio of deals suggests the market is already priced in publisher content. Watch whether Anthropic extends the agreement beyond elections, and whether other publishers begin lifting crawler blocks on Claude.
