Anthropic bets $81 billion on compute it doesn't yet own
A six-month-old start-up just landed a $10 billion Anthropic contract, capping a 60-day, $71 billion financing spree built entirely off balance sheet.
The answer
Anthropic signed $10 billion with start-up Volta atop $71 billion in chip-lease debt.
Anthropic just proved that a compute contract worth billions no longer needs to go through Amazon, Microsoft or Google. Bloomberg reported on 4 August 2026, citing people familiar with the matter, that Anthropic signed a roughly $10 billion, six-year deal with Volta Infra Holdings, a cloud start-up that did not exist six months ago. Volta confirmed a $10 billion deal with an unnamed major AI lab the same day; Anthropic declined to comment.
The contract buys Anthropic 121 megawatts of Nvidia Vera Rubin capacity at Bitdeer's Tydal campus in Norway, delivered in two phases targeting 31 December 2026 and 31 March 2027. Underpinning it is a 16-year lease Bitdeer's Tydal signed with a Volta unit worth about $4.7 billion in scheduled payments, rising to roughly $8 billion over 24 years with renewal, secured by about $1.3 billion in standby letters of credit backed by JPMorgan affiliates.
Volta itself is barely six months old. It has raised $300 million at a $2.4 billion valuation from Andreessen Horowitz, Altimeter, Nvidia, the Michael Dell family office and others, and holds a $5 billion pool to help customers finance chips.
The Volta contract sits on top of a much larger financing push: Anthropic has arranged roughly $71 billion in chip-lease deals in about 60 days. Special purpose vehicles buy the hardware, largely Google TPUs, and lease it back to Anthropic, keeping both the chips and the debt off its balance sheet, with Broadcom backstopping senior tranches. Blackstone is reportedly in talks to lead another package, and a $9.1 billion deal with Riot Platforms sent Riot shares up 25%. The Insider view
Anthropic's message to the market is that Claude demand is outrunning every compute commitment it can sign, and it is willing to pay a start-up rather than wait in line at a hyperscaler. That is a win for Volta, Bitdeer and the SPV lenders taking a cut of $81 billion in combined commitments inside two months, and it signals that off-balance-sheet chip leasing has become the default financing tool for AI labs racing to scale.
The exposure sits with the lenders and with Anthropic's future revenue. Nvidia is both an investor in Volta and the supplier of the chips Volta leases out, a structure that concentrates risk rather than spreading it: if Claude demand slows, the losses run through Nvidia, JPMorgan's letters of credit and the SPV noteholders all at once, not just through Anthropic's balance sheet.
